Use of CCTV feeds by gardai

An Garda Síochána has launched a public consultation for a draft Code of Practice on third-party live Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) feeds.

Third-party live CCTV feeds refers to CCTV footage made by a controller who is a third party to An Garda Síochána and which is provided as a monitor feed to An Garda Síochána. CCTV in Ireland is in widespread use and there is an increased demand to have access to third-party CCTV systems to tackle a range of offences, including drug-related crimes, vehicle and property crimes, and public order offences.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Cleary states at the launch of the public consultation, “Third-party live CCTV feeds are in widespread use in Ireland and can prove invaluable in the prevention, investigation, detection, and prosecution of criminal offences.

“The public’s views on how An Garda Síochána interacts with third-party live CCTV feeds systems will help us to continue to provide a community-focused policing service.”

The Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Act 2023 provides the current legal framework for the use of various recording devices, including third-party live CCTV feeds. Part 8 of this Act stipulates a new Code of Practice on third-party live CCTV feeds is required.

The aim of the Code of Practice is to provide further detail on the general operation of third party live CCTV feeds.

It is this draft Code of Practice that An Garda Síochána is now seeking input on from members of the public.

Engagement with relevant Government departments will take place alongside the public consultation.

An Garda Síochána is asking members of the public to submit their views below in regards to the third party live close circuit television (CCTV) feeds code of practice.

Iain R. Farrell

Iain became apprenticed to his father, Riocard J Farrell in 1957. His father had set up his own Solicitors practice at George’s Street, Waterford in 1920. Iain and his father formed a partnership in 1966 and they called their firm “Farrell and Farrell”. They were joined in later years by our current managing partner Donal O’ Connell and the late Jim Mulhearn. They subsequently amalgamated with another Waterford firm, George A. Commercial Property and Leases

For a long number of years, we have dealt extensively with commercial property transactions – acting for Banks, property developers and small businesses.

Our aim is to provide a full and rounded service to our commercial clients. Our Solicitors dealing in this area are very “commercially-minded”, and at the same time fully capable of dealing with all the legal and technical issues that arise with a commercial property.

Lisa Power

Legal Executive

Lisa is legal studies graduate who joined Nolan Farrell & Goff in 2016. She initially gained invaluable experience as a Legal Secretary and progressed to become a registered Legal Executive in 2022.
